This weekend one year will have gone by since the Iranian people took to the streets in droves to protest at the fraudulent elections that returned Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to the presidency. These peaceful demonstrations were met with extreme violence carried out by the Iranian regime. Since that day, the people have not backed down and continue to fight peacefully for basic human rights. Meanwhile, the government continues its crackdown on any opposition or dissent with ever increasing brutality.

دعت الكاتبة الصحافية بجريدة "القبس" الكويتية دلع المفتي المرأة العربية إلى أن تسعى للتسلح بالعلم والتنوير والثقافة لتذب بها عن نفسها أمراض سطوة الرجل عليها ونظرته الدونية لها في المجتمعات العربية، ومحاولات البعض العودة بها إلى الخلف كلما تسارعت إلى الأمام، مشيرة إلى أن خوف الرجل الشرقي من ذلك التقدم هو مبعثه لمحاولة عرقلتها. وأعربت المفتي عن استيائها البالغ من أسلوب تعاطي الإعلام العربي مع قضايا المرأة، مؤكدة أنه يهتم بسيقانها لا بالتنادي بحقوقها واحترام فكرها.

We are pleased to announce the blog launch for Changing Masculinities, Changing Communities. The blog is an activity pertaining to the project implemented by The Danish Egyptian Dialogue Institute (DEDI) in cooperation with the Danish Center for Information on Gender, Equality and Ethnicity (KVINFO) in 2010 titled Changing Masculinities, Changing Communities, facilitating the meeting of a group of Egyptian and Danish activists, artists, academics and social workers in Cairo and Copenhagen whose work involves an exploration and awareness of masculinity as a crucial factor in the construction of social relations and its impact on communities. 

The new Independent Expert in the field of cultural rights, Ms Farida Shaheed, presented her first report to the Human Rights Council on Monday 31 May 2010. The presentation was followed by an interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert, which took place in the morning of 1 June. The report presents the Independent Expert's preliminary views on the conceptual and legal framework of the mandate on cultural rights and the priority issues she plans to focus on in the future.

Bahraini women married to foreigners have vowed to step in during parliamentary elections to be held this year to pressure the government to amend in the nationality law. During a meeting between the Bahraini women married to foreigners and representatives of the Nationality Campaign, a panel of eight women was formed to use power of their vote to get the law amended.

Newly elected Conservative MP Michelle Donelan appears in this Channel 4 news video with Lesley Abdela debating the issue of women in politics. Watch and cringe - she is, of course, against quotas. We need quality, not quantity, she cries. 

Womankind is an indigenous local NGO based in Garissa, in the North eastern province of Kenya.
