Very slim women are seen as poor and unable to afford food in West African culture, and overweight women look more affluent.

As a result big is not only beautiful, but a goal that women strive towards.

Jordan: 'honour killing' support still strong

The belief that so-called "honour killings" are justified continues to be common among Jordanian teenagers, a new Cambridge University study says.

The study by researchers from the university's Institute of Criminology found that almost half of boys and one in five girls interviewed in the capital, Amman, believe that killing a daughter, sister or wife who has "dishonoured" or shamed the family, is justified.

Egypt needs a revolution against sexual violence

In November 2011, after I joined a protest on Mohamed Mahmoud Street in Cairo with a friend, Egyptian riot police beat me – breaking my left arm and right hand – and sexually assaulted me. I was also detained by the interior minister and military intelligence for 12 hours.

After I was released, it took all I had not to cry when I saw the look on the face of a very kind woman I'd never met before, except on Twitter, who came to pick me up and take me to the emergency room for medical attention. (She is now a cherished friend.)

أعلنت منظمة الصحة العالمية، في أول دراسة شاملة لها من نوعها، أن أكثر من ثلث نساء العالم يتعرضن للعنف الجسدي أو الجنسي في حياتهن، وعادة ما يكون ذلك من شريك حياتهن الذكر. وقالت المنظمة التابعة للأمم المتحدة إن حوالي 35.6% من نساء العالم يتعرضن للعنف من الرجال الذين يتشاركون معهن الحياة، فيما بلغت نسبة جرائم قتل النساء على يد شركائهن المحبين 38%.

تشديد العقوبات للحد من الاغتصاب في أرض الصومال

يقول مسؤولون أن تشديد العقوبات وتقليل الاعتماد على نظم العدالة التقليدية يمكن أن يساعد في وضع حد لارتفاع معدلات الاغتصاب في جمهورية أرض الصومال المعلنة من جانب واحد. وفي تصريح لشبكة الأنباء الإنسانية (إيرين)، قال عبدي عبدالله حسن، مدير الشؤون الاجتماعية في وزارة العمل والشؤون الاجتماعية في أرض الصومال: "تشير تقديراتنا إلى وقوع حوالي 5,000 حالة اغتصاب في أرض الصومال في عام 2012، مقارنة بـ 4,000 حالة في عام 2011. ولا توجد معلومات عن معدلات العنف القائم على النوع الاجتماعي في أرض الصومال".

Déclaration du Réseau Femmes sous lois musulmane sur les violations des droits des femmes dans le conflit au Mali

Le Réseau Femmes sous lois musulmanes (WLUML) exprime sa profonde inquiétude face à l’escalade de la violence au Nord Mali. Les associations féminines, les ONG, diverses organisations des droits humains nationales et internationales et du système des Nations-Unies, ainsi que les media nationaux et étrangers n’ont cessé d’en relayer les nouvelles. Elles ont rendu compte des exactions terribles que subissent les populations locales, depuis le début du conflit armé qui a vu la sécession gagner le Mali.

Documentary Screening: Women in Shroud

Documentary directed by Farid Haerinejad and Mohammed Reza Kazemi. Women in Shroud provides an in-depth look into the efforts of women's rights lawyers and activists to stop the stoning of women in Iran.

This event is part of the Stop Stoning Women – Global Campaign.

Prominent Iranian Human Rights Lawyer Shadi Sadr, who features in the film, will be part of the panel discussion after the screening.
