UPDATE: International: “One Day, One Struggle” to Promote Human Rights across Muslim Societies

On November 9, 2009, a diverse group of nongovernmental organizations, academic institutions and activists across the Middle East, North Africa, South and Southeast Asia carried out bold events to promote sexual and bodily rights as human rights. As part of the historic international campaign “One Day One Struggle” organized by the Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR), over 20 organizations held simultaneous public demonstrations and meetings to assert that sexual and reproductive rights are universal human rights and sexuality is not a private issue but a site of political struggle.

Arab world: Grassroots Politics and Women’s Activism Forum

Posted by Yusra: While in Washington, D.C., last month, I attended a forum on Muslim women’s rights titled “Women and the Politics of Change in the Middle East,” at the John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. It was sponsored by the Women’s Learning Partnership, an international NGO dedicated to women’s leadership and empowerment, especially in Muslim majority countries. The event was held to honor the 30^th anniversary of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination (CEDAW). CEDAW is a U.N. treaty aimed at providing a universal framework for women’s rights.

مصر: الإخوان يرفضون تغيير لائحة مكتب الإرشاد لإدخال عناصر نسائية

ومفتى الجماعة يرجع الرفض لـ«الخوف على المرأة ومنها. أعلنت جماعة الإخوان المسلمين رفضها التام تعديل لائحة مكتب الإرشاد الداخلية، وذلك على خلفية عدد من المطالبات من داخل الجماعة بضرورة تعديل اللائحة قبل انتخابات المكتب لضمان دخول أعضاء يمثلون المرأة والشباب. وقال الشيخ محمد عبدالله الخطيب، عضو مكتب الإرشاد ومفتى الجماعة، لـ«المصرى اليوم»: «لا يوجد أى تفكير فى تعديل اللائحة الداخلية، وسوف نقوم بتحويل كل من طالب بتعديلها للتحقيق تمهيداً لإيقاف وتجميد هؤلاء عن العمل داخل التنظيم».

On November 9, 2009, a diverse group of nongovernmental organizations will stage bold actions in 11 countries to promote human rights. As part of the historic international campaign “One Day One Struggle” organized by the Coalition for Sexual and Bodily Rights in Muslim Societies (CSBR), over 20 organizations will hold simultaneous public demonstrations and events to assert that sexual and reproductive rights are universal human rights based on the inherent freedom, dignity and equality of all human beings.
