Tools for Activists: The letter writing campaign

There are different forms of public participation. In addition to demonstrations and rallies, there are other efficient tools to demand change, such as poster and postcard campaigns, calls for action campaigns, petitions and direct lobbying. This WLUML Tool for Activists focuses on just one form of public participation: the letter writing campaign or solidarity letter.

The WLUML interview: Farida Shaheed

Farida Shaheed is Director of Research at Shirkat Gah - Women's Resource Centre in Pakistan. In 1986 she met Marieme Hélie-Lucas, the founder of Women Living Under Muslim Laws, who had come to Pakistan for a program called 'Muslim Women Speak'. Farida Shaheed is a longstanding council member of WLUML. Ms. Shaheed is also the first Independent Expert on cultural rights.

Fatou Sow is a Senegalese Sociologist. A member of a number of African and international associations, Ms. Sow is a founding member of Le Groupe de recherche sur les Femmes et les lois au Sénégal (GREFELS) and is currently the Coordinator of the International Coordination Office of Women Living Under Muslim Laws.

L'entretien WLUML : Codou Bop

Mme Codou Bop, Sénégalaise, est journaliste et chercheure sur les questions relatives aux droits des femmes. Elle coordonne le Groupe de Recherche sur les Femmes et les Lois au Sénégal (GREFELS), et le bureau de coordination régionale pour le région d'Afrique et le Moyen-Orient du réseau Women Living Under Muslim Laws (Femmes sous lois musulmanes). Elle s’intéresse plus spécifiquement aux droits sexuels et reproductifs des femmes, à l’Islam et droits humains des femmes et au trafic des êtres humains, des femmes notamment.

Codou Bop is a journalist based in Dakar, Senegal and is the Coordinator of the Groupe de Recherche sur les Femmes et les Lois au Senegal (GREFELS) and the Africa-Middle East regional coordination office for Women Living Under Muslim Laws. Ms. Bop's publications include: "Islam and Women's Sexual Health and Rights in Senegal" in Islam and Human Rights: Advocacy for Social Change in Local Contexts, Global Media Publications, 2006.

ويمثل الحوار الدائر حول حجاب المرأة الذي اتخذ منه رمزا لهويتها كمسلمة أو زيها نموذجا واقعيا لعمل مثل هذه النظم القمعية، ويأتي الجدل الصامت بين الرئيس الأمريكي "باراك أوباما" والرئيس الفرنسي "نيكولا سركوزي" أحد أعراض هذا الداء المستشري، ففي الرابع من شهر حزيرات- يونيو عام 2009 أعلن أوباما أمام البرلمان المصري أن حكومة الولايات المتحدة قد لجأت إلى القضاء لحماية حق النساء والفتيات في ارتداء الحجاب ومعاقبة كل من ينكر عليهن هذا الحق، وبعد مرور يومين وفي أثناء زيارته لفرنسا، شجع السيد أوباما نظيره الفرنسي السيد ساركوزي على إنهاء حظر ارتداء الحجاب في المدارس العامة، فرد عليه السيد ساركوزي بحدة قائلا له "إن النقاب يرمز إلى خضوع المرأة ومذلتها". ولقد تشكلت لجنة برلمانية تضم مختلف الأحزاب السياسية للبحث في مسألة ارتداء النساء للنقاب في فرنسا، وستعد هذه اللجنة إجراءات قمعية تتماشى مع الدول الأوروبية الأخرى.

In this issue, we welcome the launch of the programme “Women reclaiming and re-defining cultures: Asserting rights over body, self, and public spaces”, a joint venture between WLUML and the Institute of Women’s Empowerment (IWE), which brings together women from the Muslim world to examine and discuss how systems of culture, tradition and religion, are used as instruments to legitimize their oppression.

Il met en lumière evènements importants survenus dans le réseau, durant ces derniers mois : lancement de la campagne internationale pour arrêter de tuer et de lapider les femmes, le 26 novembre à Istanbul (Turquie) et « Feminism in the Muslim World - Third Leadership Institute».
