Egypt: Coalition of Egyptian Feminist Organizations open letter to Prime Minister

The Coalition of Egyptian Feminist Organizations welcomes the appointment of Mr. Essam Sharaf as Prime Minister of the new civilian government of Egypt, especially after he confirmed being fully committed to the demands of the 25th of January revolution. The Coalition considers that the achievement of these demands require a clear representation of all the forces involved in the Egyptian revolution in the composition of the new cabinet, mainly the youth who played a historical role in initiating and inspiring the revolution by their determination to pursue the march till the end. The Coalition also considers that the forthcoming cabinet should reflect the representation of women from diverse affiliations, a representation that did not occur in the past cabinet or in the various committees that were established following the revolution.

Egypt: Celebrating International Women's Day after the Jan25 Revolution

A group of young women and men led by Nawal Saadawi – a prominent Egyptian feminist – called for A Million Women March on 8 March to celebrate the centenary of International Women’s Day. A number of young people joined the coordination meetings and other women's rights groups decided to participate in the march with their slogans.

Egypt: International Women’s Day: "I am happy, despite being harassed"

As everyone knows, today is International Women’s Day, and it is the first day for the celebration of women rights after the success of the Egyptian Revolution, which forced the former president Mubarak out of power in February. For the past two weeks, a call was made for citizens to participate in a million women march in Tahrir square to celebrate the day and honour the martyrs of Egypt: women and men. The march was supposed to be between 2:00- 6:00 PM on March 8 and the square was chosen as a symbol for the determination of the Egyptian pro-democracy movement.

مصر: لجنة الدستور تبدأ عملها بأقصاء الخبيرات القانونيات من النساء

قى الموقعون على هذا البيان بقلق بالغ قائمة أسماء لجنة مشاركة الدستور حيث خلت اللجنة من وجود أى مشاركة لخبيرات قانونيات مما يعد أقصاء غير مقبول لنصف المجتمع الأمر الذى يضع ظلال من الشك حول مستقبل التحول الديمقراطى فى مصر بعد الثورة , ويضع تساؤل حول مستقبل المشاركة وما كانت الثورة تسعى الى تحرير المجتمع كاملا ام لفئات محددة أيضا نتساءل حول المعايير التى يتم الأختيار على أساسها وهل هى معايير تستند على الكفاءة والنزاهة, وان كان كذلك لماذا تم أقصاء الخبيرات القانونيات وهم كثر, فى المحكمة الدستورية العليا والمحاماة وكليات الحقوق , أم معايير سياسيةعلى حساب قيم العدالة والمساوة التى بنيت عليها الثورةونؤكد ان المرأة المصرية كما شاركت بقوة فى الثورة والشهادة ومازال منهن مفقودات ومعتقلات فأن من حقهن المشاركة فى بناء الدولة المصرية الحديثة المبنية على اسس المواطنة وأننا اذ نؤكد ثقتنا فى الجهد الكبير الذى يبذله المجلس العسكرى لتحول مصر نحو الديمقراطية , نطالبه بالتأكيد على قيم المواطنة وإشراك الخبيرات من النساء فى لجنة تعديل الدستور .

Egypt: Constitutional committee excludes female legal experts

The institutions and organizations below have signed this statement in disapproval of the criteria and formation of the Constitutional Committee, whereby the committee does not include a single female expert. Advancing with a committee like this, triggers fears and suspicions with regards to the future of Egypt and the transitional phase which Egypt is currently witnessing after the 25^th of January Revolution. This issue poses a critical question with regards to democracy and the main aims of the revolution which were initially spelled out as equality, freedom, democracy and participation of all citizens.

مصر: فرخندة لـ«نائبات الكوتة»:لا تخجلن من الكلام فى المجلس واحضرن الجلسات «عشان الهانم ما تزعلش»

استغل عدد من عضوات مجلس الشعب عن مقاعد الكوتة الحلقة النقاشية، التى عقدها المجلس القومى للمرأة السبت، حول نظم وأساليب العمل البرلمانى، لطرح ما يجول بخاطرهن حول كيفية القيام بدورهن، والمشاكل التى يعانين منها. سألت الكاتبة الصحفية أمينة شفيق، العضوة المعينة فى المجلس: «هل من الضرورى أن تتفرغ عضوة مجلس الشعب للعمل البرلمانى، وهل يسمح لها بالمشاركة فى المظاهرات والوقفات الاحتجاجية، لاسيما إن كان عملها هو الصحافة»، وأجاب عن السؤال المستشار سامى مهران، أمين عام مجلس الشعب، الذى حضر الحلقة بقوله: «الصحفى غير معنى بالتفرغ للعمل البرلمانى، ومن حقه الالتحام بالشعب ما لم يكن عملاً يعاقب عليه القانون».
