Gambia: Police did a poor investigations in GAMCOTRAP case, says former Solicitor General

Former Solicitor General Amie Bensouda has expressed dissatisfaction with the way, and manner the police investigated the GAMCOTRAP alleged theft case saying that the work of the police was the least satisfactory. She told a court in Banjul that the police investigations were improper. Lawyer Bensouda argued that Gamcotrap is not a central bank licensed micro-credit organisation, and therefore not legally permitted to give-out micro-credit, as alleged by the state. But the state witness maintains that he did not know that a central bank license is required for one to operate a micro-credit.

Lamin Manneh, a security officer, yesterday testified in the trial of Dr. Isatou Touray, the Executive Director of Gambia Committe on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Girls, and Amie Bojang-Sissoho, Programme Coordinator of the same organisation at the Banjul Magistrates' Court.

L’audience du procès du Dr. Isatou Touray, Directrice exécutive et Amie Bojang- Sissoho, Coordonnatrice des programmes pour le Comité Gambien sur les pratiques traditionnelles (GAMCOTRAP), n’a finalement pas eu lieu ce lundi 22 novembre 2010 devant le juge Emmanuel Nkea au Tribunal de Banjul. Le ministère public ayant demandé le report du fait de l’absence de témoins à la barre.

Coalition for Human Rights in the Gambia Press Release, 24 November 2010: State Prosecution Officer Sainey Joof told the court that the case against GAMCOTRAP is not a Civil case but it is the State that has brought in the case against the two Senior Officers of the Organisation. The court hearing of the trial of Dr. Isatou Touray, the Executive Director and Amie Bojang- Sissoho, Programme Coordinator for the Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices (GAMCOTRAP) failed to proceed yesterday Monday November 22nd 2010 at the Banjul Magistrates Court before Magistrate Emmanuel Nkea. The prosecution applied for an adjournment of the hearing because their witnesses were not present.

UPDATE: Gambia: Defence maintains stance on discharging of Gamcotrap officials

The team of defence counsel comprising Amie Bensouda, Lamin K Mboge, Sagarr Jaharteh and Ebrima Jah, have for the second time maintained their stance in their application for the court to discharge Dr Isatou Touray, executive director of Gamcotrap and Amie Bojang-Sissoho, programme coordinator of the same organisation.

Mise à jour: Gambie : Appel pour l’annulation des poursuites après Dr Touray et Bojang-Sissoho sont libérées sous caution

Après avoir passé dix jours en détention les deux femmes défenseurs des droits de l’homme ont été libérées sous caution le mercredi 20 octobre après avoir été entendues par les juges du Tribunal de Banjul, dans une salle pleine à craquer. Le montant de la caution est fixé à 1,5 Million de Dalasi (D.1. 5 millions) soit autour de US$ 50, 000 chacune plus une propriété foncière.

UPDATE: Gambia: Call for withdrawal of case after Dr. Touray & Bojang-Sissoho released on bail

After spending ten days in detention the two prominent Women’s Human Rights Defenders were granted bail on Wednesday 20th October, 2010 after a hearing in a crowded courtroom at the Banjul Magistrates Court. The bail bond is One Million Five Hundred Thousand Gambian Dalasis (over US$ 50, 000) each, and a surety with a landed property.
