"Dear Friends,

On December 10, 2007, a civil society campaign was launched to celebrate the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This project is pioneered by a group of notable activists known as The Elders and seeks to reclaim the principles in the UDHR though the message that Every Human Has Rights.

The Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) is a partner in this UDHR60 NGO campaign and will be participating with a special focus on the month of March. In March, and using International Women’s Day as an anchor, CWGL will take the lead on highlighting a spectrum of women’s human rights issues, making more visible why the UDHR is important for women’s lives, and focusing on the significance of women’s leadership in realizing human rights for all. As part of this campaign, activities highlighting Human Rights for Women ‹—› Human Rights for All will begin March 1 and culminate with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign 2008 (November 25 to December 10).

Human rights cannot be universal without human rights for women. The quest to end gender inequality and to create a world free from violence, discrimination and injustice is crucial to building a just, peaceful and sustainable world where human rights for all are respected. The UDHR60 campaign offers an opportunity to advocate for women’s rights and to assess progress made toward advancing a feminist interpretation of the Declaration.

We invite all of our partners and colleagues to join us in celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Declaration, and honoring decades of landmark women’s rights advocacy as we work to put in practice the UDHR60 campaign slogan, Every Human Has Rights. We encourage groups to focus in March and throughout the year on activities that address the many human rights challenges facing women around the globe and to celebrate the leadership of women in defending human rights. We especially encourage you to form your International Women’s Day (March 8) activities on the 60th anniversary of the UDHR and request that you email information about your planned events to 16days@cwgl.rutgers.edu

Wishing you all a happy and peaceful new year!"
