UN: International Criminal Court statute enters into force

Women's Caucus for Gender Justice Since the 60th ratification on 11 April 2002, the Rome Statute enters into force on 1 July 2002 at which time the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court over crimes of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity will take effect.
The International Criminal Court will be the world's first permanent international criminal tribunal established to prosecute individuals for what are considered the most serious crimes of concern to the international community. This historic development is especially significant for women as a broad range of crimes of sexual and gender violence have been included in the Rome Statute in an unprecedented way.
