A delegation from the Pakistani Women's Commission today said it was putting pressure on the government for enacting laws that would not let the perpetrators of honour crimes get away.
The four-member delegation of Pakistan's National Commission on the status of women (NCSW) said honour killing could not be condoned under any circumstance and was nothing but `murder'.
"Honour killing is nothing but murder. And men often use it as a ploy to get away with murder," Simi Kamal, a member of NCSW, told reporters.

She said it was especially a problem in tribal areas of Pakistan which are not so developed and the commission has been demanding more stringent laws that do not allow the perpetrators of the crime to get away.

Asked about the `purdah' system, Kamal said, "every society has its own decorum and under Islamic laws both men and women have to be modestly dressed."

To questions related to family planning, she said "there is no restriction on family planning in Pakistan and couples do not desire to have more than three or four children."

On the issue of foeticide, she said Islam condemns killing of children.

The delegation earlier interacted with the members of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW).

During the interaction facilitated by the United Nations development programme, issues relating to economic status of women, traditional power dynamics and policy-level challenges were also discussed.
