Burkina Faso: The Bere Declaration to end Female Genital Cutting (FGC)
Source:
TOSTAN 5000 people attended the first Public Declaration on FGC abandonment in Burkina Faso.
The
first ceremony of Public Declaration on FGC abandonment organized in Burkina
Faso was a big success for the Burkinabé Association Mwangaza Action which has
carried out the TOSTAN Program in 23 villages of Bazéga Province, in
collaboration with Frontiers in Reproductive Health of the Population Council
funded by USAID/w and the Supraregional Sectoral Project to Eradicate Female
Genital Mutilation of GTZ.
The TOSTAN program, which led 708 communities to publicly abandon FGC in Senegal, was successfully implemented by MWANGAZA ACTION during two years with a tremendous technical assistance that TOSTAN provided in adapting the program to the Burkinabé setting. Twenty three villages that attended the basic education Program decided to publicly abandon FGC in their communities. It’s the first time such an event has been held in Burkina Faso.
