Legal Network for Women’s Inheritance and Property Rights

The overall objective of the network is to advance women’s property and inheritance rights in the context of HIV and AIDS in Eastern and Southern Africa through the sharing of information, experiences and strategies by legal practitioners and human rights activists. Specific objectives of the network are:

-          To provide an interactive forum for exchange of legal and grounded information on women’s rights, inheritance and property rights and HIV/AIDS among legal practitioners and activists in Eastern and Southern Africa and beyond.

-          To create a vibrant network where lawyers and activists in East and Southern Africa positively influence to each other to make a concrete contribution towards mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS on women in general and widows in particular.

-          To improve the legal rights in property and inheritance of ordinary women in East and Southern Africa.

-          To create an information base for scholars, activists and policy makers on women’s rights, inheritance and property rights and HIV/AIDS in East and Southern Africa.

-          To improve collaboration among women’s legal practitioners and activists in East and Southern Africa.

-          Federation of Women Lawyers (Kenya Chapter, FIDA Kenya) and  Women and Law in Southern Africa Research and Educational Trust Malawi  (WILSA, Malawi) are the initial coordinating partners who have come together and formed the Legal Network for Women’s Property and Inheritance Rights of Southern Africa, which brings together human rights organizations, law societies and individuals in Eastern and Southern Africa.
