We are delighted to announce that Aya Chebbi has won this year’s Excellence in Leadership award from the African Viewpoint Journal. This was granted on 19 January 2015, and is part of their Africa Youth Awards.

 

Bustling Senegal set the scene for passionate debate, robust reflection, slam poetry and much laughter this April at the first West Africa transformative feminist leadership workshop - brought together by our Women’s Empowerment and Leadership Development for Democratization programme (WELDD). An impressive group of emerging female leaders from Mali, Niger and Senegal came together for five intense days of capacity building, awareness-raising and strategizing under the blazing Dakar sun.

The empowerment of young women is key for advancing development around the world, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today, adding that it is a priority for the United Nations to encourage their active participation in society.

“The lack of women’s representation – of women’s empowerment – affects individual women’s rights – and it holds back whole countries,” Mr. Ban toldparticipants at the first World Congress of Global Partnership for Young Women and Second Global Partnership Forum in Seoul, Republic of Korea (ROK).
