Western Sahara

MINURSO, the UN mission in Western Sahara, is the only contemporary UN peacekeeping mission in the world without a mandate to monitor human rights. The Western Sahara Campaign writes, "We are very disappointed that last week the Secretary General failed to expressly recommend human rights monitoring. See our press release here. But there is still time to influence the decision-makers: the members of the Security Council and the “Group of Friends” (including Spain). We need your help to pressure your national delegations as a matter of urgency! The Security Council consultation starts this Thursday! (15th April)"

This video is a joint action between the National Union of Saharawi Women and Ana Arenas Moreno as a recognition of their incredible work and efforts during their 34 years in exile. It intends to raise awareness and advocate for the rights of the Saharawi people, especially of the women, to help them to strengthen international relationships and support their twiza, their social collective and solidarity movement. 

A Western Sahara activist expelled by Morocco has been allowed to return from Spain after maintaining a hunger strike for 32 days. Aminatou Haidar, 42, left Lanzarote airport in the Canary Islands on a small, private plane after a deal was reached, details of which are unclear. She said her fast would continue until she was safely home with her children. Living on only sweetened water, she has developed health problems, and left hospital in Lanzarote in an ambulance."This is a triumph for international law, for human rights, for international justice and for the cause" of the Western Sahara, she told reporters as she left.

WLUML's solidarity letter to human rights defender, Aminatou Haidar. The Moroccan government is blocking Ms. Haidar from returning to her home in Western Sahara.
