An unlikely feminist in India's traditionally male-dominated southern heartland, has caused a storm by leading the movement for the women's mosque.
WLUML notes that Pudukottai district was the first in India to attain 100% literacy according to the 1991 Census. This story illustrates the link between educating women and ushering in social (in this case religious) reform. Because Muslim family laws are uncodified in India and few women marry under the non-religious Special Marriages Act, women in Muslim communities generally turn to mosque committees for rulings regarding matters of marriage and divorce.
