In this TEDx talk, Afghan women's rights activist and WLUML networker Noorjahan Akbar shares her personal journey for getting an education and the impact that education has on empowering women around the world and in Afghanistan.

Noorjahan Akbar’s has emerged as a leading figure in the fight for women’s rights in Afghanistan.  She works to inspire both men and women, to recognize the importance of gender equality and to act against violence and unfair treatment of women in Afghanistan, often at great personal risk. Ms. Akbar has worked with many women's rights organizations and media institutions in her country, and is a Women Living Under Muslim Laws networker. Ms. Akbar was named by Forbes as a Top Woman Changing the World and as a Top 10 College Women to Watch 2013 by Glamour Magazine. Ms. Akbar has also collected and published a book of women's writings and two story books for children in Afghanistan. Her books have been distributed throughout her country. She currently runs a social media campaign called Freewomenwriters that supports female poets and writers in Afghanistan. Noorjahan Akbar is currently a student at American University in Washington, D.C.
