Announcement: Stop Stoning Petition Reaches 10,000 Signatures

We did it! Women Living Under Muslim Laws (WLUML) are delighted to announce that our petition, part of the Global Campaign to Stop Stoning Women, has received 10,000 signatures!  Reaching this target more than a month ahead of schedule is testament to how strongly people feel worldwide about bringing an end to stoning.  WLUML would like to thank everyone who signed the petition and said NO to this abhorrent practice.

So, what’s next?  As our campaign continues, our grassroots partners persevere in working to raise awareness and campaign against stoning, be it as judicial or extra-judicial practice.  We stand in solidarity with our partners in Iraq working to present a resolution against stoning to the Iraqi and Kurdish Parliaments and the alliance of Sudanese rights activists who strive to reform adultery laws, as well as our sister organisations in Aceh (Indonesia), Iran, and Afghanistan, all fighting the practice of stoning in their respective contexts.

In January 2014, WLUML will bring together our allies, along with other experts, activists and high-profile speakers to participate in an international event to discuss stoning as a persistent form of violence against women, and how we can all come together to bring it to an end.

The fact that we have reached this target is incredible, but we MUST continue to spread the word about this brutal practice; the more voices we have behind us, the more pressure we can exert on the UN, governments, and other international institutions.

On the 8th of March, 2014, WLUML and its allies will take the campaign to the 58th UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York. With the support of your 10,000 (and counting) voices, we will stand on the international platform and demand a UN Resolution against stoning.

We have come this far, but we are still on the journey. Thank you for your support and solidarity. Please help us by continuing to spread the word wider and farther, and together let‘s end one of the most brutal forms of violence against women!
