Sudan: Sudanese WHRDs In Egypt Receive Death Threats

Taysier Abdelgadir Shaaeldin is a Sudanese woman human rights defender (WHRD) who fled to Egypt for her safety a few months ago. Taysier received phone threats at 11pm this November 22rd, from the same officer in Sudanese security who twice arrested her in Sudan. Taysier is from Darfur and has been arrested several times for her activism and humanitarian work in Darfur.

She has been receiving threats from Sudanese officers since last September.  A mother of three, Taysier now fears for her children’s safety.  “This time they said they will reach for my children, and they know their schools in Cairo. I am very afraid for my children”.

Attacks and threats from Sudanese security against Sudanese WHRDs continues to take place even after these women flee Sudan searching for safe refuge outside the country.  Nuba woman activist Haram Toto fled to Egypt few months ago. She received phone threats from Sudanese security officers this November 18th, after her sister Arafa Toto fled to Cairo following threats and detention in Kadugli for two weeks.  According to Haram, “the security officer called me and said that they followed my sister to reach me. Now they can reach me anytime.  And they told her that she will be assassinated in Cairo”.

Somaya Hensousa, the Sudanese journalist and WHRD, also received phone threats from a Sudanese security officer this November 21st.  According to Somaya, “the officer threatened to take away my Sudanese nationality and cancel my passport if I continued my lawsuit against the security officers who tortured me three weeks.”  Somaya was recently tortured by Sudanese security following detention last month. Her hair was shaved and she was burned with an iron.

Huda Ali, another Nuba WHRD refugee in Cairo, received phone threats from security officers on November 16th. Her family fled Sudan recently after her brothers and sisters were subjected to intimidation in Sudan for their activism.

Reports of threats from the Sudanese security against WHRDs in Egypt has greatly increased in the past months , as many of WHRDs fled Sudan following the Sudanese government’s violent campaign against women activists inside the country earlier this year.  Many WHRDs who reported threats to Arry refused to be mentioned in this action for fear for their lives and that of their families.

Arry organization is deeply concerned about the security of the Sudanese WHRDs in Egypt, as they remain under attack from the Sudanese security even after they flee Sudan. Arry organization calls on the Sudanese government to immediately stop its campaign of intimidation and threats against WHRDs, and to respect their rights when they take refuge in other countries.
